Indigo FM Turns 10

10 years ago today, an Indigo Shire radio enthusiast named Paul Fitzgerald received an official document that his vision to start up a local radio station in various Indigo Shire towns was off and running.

2 June 2010 is the date that Indigo FM officially incorporated. It’s what we have come to celebrate each year as our birthday. In saying that we do appreciate that a lot of work and testing went on in both Beechworth and Yackandandah from late 2009 leading up to mid 2010.

Thanks to the many members, businesses, community groups, event committees, independent musicians and individuals who have shared our 10 year journey. Especially we thank every single official who has pulled on a T-shirt or worn a cap for Indigo FM.

Who we are today is largely reflective of those contributions from the many faces across our first decade. We’d also like to thank our major community partners who have been with us on this journey – Indigo Shire Council, Yackandandah Community Centre, Yackandandah Folk Festival, Beechworth and District Community Bank, Kiewa Tangambalanga Lions Club and Beechworth Music Festival.

Throughout June we will be featuring some of the stories, events and people who have helped shape Indigo FM across the past decade.

Back to Paul Fitzgerald. Paul was our founding member and Indigo FM’s very first President. At the initial meeting to set up Indigo FM, he was joined by Yackandandah’s Phil Buerckner and Shayne Soall. They each took on key roles and the project gathered momentum quickly. Paul was President for the first 2 years and later stepped back to allow others to take the reins.

Eclectic Avenue is our longest running show – Bernie, Michael and Sandy clock up 10 years on air in 2020. Bullfrog’s Roadhouse (and it’s various incarnations) with Mark is close behind having also commenced in 2010. Mighty fine achievements – but more importantly radio shows that demonstrate what Indigo FM is all about – casual vibe combined with extensive yet intimate knowledge of music. The same goes for  Musical Mash with Spencer and Everyone Deserves Music with Scott each of which are in their 8th consecutive year. Phil Buerckner remains an active presenter too, as a core member of our new Yack Chat phone-in program.

10 Years down and we’re just getting started.

We’re still just as hungry as ever to keep on partnering with worthy causes in our quest to live out our Vision:

A sustainable and accessible local voice that reflects and enriches the diversity of our community.

Cheers!

Live-to-air Talkback Radio Hits The Airwaves in Yackandandah

  • A collaboration between the Yackandandah Community Centre, local radio station, Indigo FM and ReConnect Communications will broadcast “Yack Chat” on 88.0FM each week day from 10am till 11am.

For the first time Yackandandah people will be able to phone the station and speak with the presenter live-to-air. The number to call in on is 0419 881 566.

Indigo FM President Scott Landells welcomed the new programming initiative and congratulated YCC for coming up with the idea and the resources – both people and equipment (supplied by ReConnect Communications) to bring their idea to a reality.

“We are only too aware of how sudden and drastic the changes to day to day life have occurred and this is having significant impacts for many people within our communities,” Mr Landells said.

“And of course, equity in regards to access to technology is not consistent, so, many people can very quickly become isolated in a way that endangers their well-being.

“What YCC have come up with is a great example of the ways that Indigo FM and our various community partners are adapting to a drastically altered social and economic landscape.

“We also thank Ben Quick from ReConnect Communications for his company’s assistance.”

YCC Manager, David Thorpe said it was early days for the talkback concept in Yackandandah but he hoped the community would get on board and call in to talk about what’s happening in their lives, pass on information or just share a story.

“We really want people to call in, talk to us and, in turn, talk to the wider community,’’ he said.

“Yack people can think of Yack Chat as their own, we are really encouraging feedback which will help draw the community together.

Mr Thorpe said YCC committee members would take on the role of volunteer presenters.

“I think it’s really important to find ways for people to connect and communicate during this time of social isolation and restrictions,’’ he said.

A reminder that the number to call in on is 0419 881 566.

Eventually …. Daniel Champagne returns to Yackandandah – Friday 26 Feb

Daniel has a way to coax extraordinary sounds from his guitar as demonstrated here

Following a couple of Covid-related postponements, Indigo FM Presents brilliant guitarist singer-songwriter Daniel Champagne who will grace the stage again at Yackandandah Public Hall on Friday 26 February.

“We are honoured to have the opportunity to host a date on Daniel Champagne’s 2021 Australian tour. His concerts in 2018 and 2019 were exhilarating performances and we are very excited that Daniel will take to the stage at Yackandandah Public Hall again,” said Indigo FM President Scott Landells.

“Champagne has remained determined to tour Australia despite the huge impacts and obstacles posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. We eventually had this concert booked in for June 2020, then it got re-scheduled to September 2020 and now finally we can announce the event has the green light to go ahead on Friday 26 February.

“His commitment to his fans worldwide and his craft is second to none. Daniel has conducted over 250 daily live stream sessions on his Facebook page since the beginning of the pandemic, which is really quite amazing.

“We have the QR code registered for this event as part of the State Government’s covid-safe conditions which will allow 120 people to attend the show.

“The show is a sell-out and we’re looking forward to seeing a bit of a crowd again in the Yackandandah Public Hall. There will be just Daniel’s performance – no support act this time around – in order to keep the show format as covid-safe as possible.”

Chiltern Site Set To Transmit From Neighbourhood House

Maree Murphy – left (Chiltern Neighbourhood House) and Scott Landells – right (Indigo FM President) announcing the news that the studio will be set-up at the Neighbourhood House.

Indigo FM is very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Indigo North Health to set up our Chiltern radio studio within the new Chiltern Neighbourhood House. This marks the beginning of an exciting phase for our volunteer-run local radio station and especially for the community of Chiltern. We are planning to be on air around the end of October 2019.

Indigo FM Chiltern will put out a local signal with an approximate radius of 5km on 87.6FM. The station will be on air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year and will be run entirely by volunteers. It will provide an opportunity for locals of all ages to be trained to present radio programs to their local community as well as creating podcasts. Currently there are a couple of locals already trained up and others keen to be trained.

87.6 Indigo FM Chiltern will join our sites at Beechworth, Tangambalanga and Yackandandah as a full-time radio site, open for business.

Our site at the Chiltern Neighbourhood House offers many benefits and should be a good fit within this great facility for Chiltern. Indigo FM is grateful to the staff of Indigo North Health for their support, especially Maree Murphy as well as Chiltern Tourism and Development Inc and Indigo Shire whose community grant funds have allowed the purchase of some equipment for the site.

If you’ve ever harboured a secret ambition to have your own radio show, well we want to talk to you about making that happen. We would love for you to become a regular presenter on 87.6 Indigo FM Chiltern. Your show might be about music that you love – or films, IT, cars, gardening, sport etc. Talk to us about your passion and we will train you up to make it a reality.

Membership of Indigo FM ranges from $14 if you’re a student or pensioner/concession to $80 per annum for a business. That will get you two 30 second recorded announcements per day on our airwaves indicating your support of Indigo FM. Full Membership details are available here.

We’re also keen to take on volunteers who wish to support Indigo FM in a range of behind the scenes roles.

For all enquiries please email us on [email protected] or call Scott on 0481 267 269.

87.6 Indigo FM Chiltern will play a unique mix of music interspersed with announcements for local businesses and events. Musically we are very proud of the fact that our sites embrace diversity and play a minimum 50% Australian content, including a focus on current, independent Australian artists, many of whom are either based locally or have toured through the Indigo Shire playing at local festivals, pubs, wineries, cafes, halls etc. We mix this in with some familiar tunes and then change our playlist every 6 months to keep things sounding fresh.

All enquiries on this matter feel free to contact Acting Site Co-ordinator Scott Landells on 0481 267 269 or via email on [email protected].

Healthy Turnout for AGM

They travelled from far and wide last night – from Rutherglen in the north-west and Mt Beauty in the south-east and plenty in between as Indigo FM held it’s 2019 Annual General Meeting at the relatively central and delightful Wooragee Community Centre. 21 people attended in all as Indigo FM determined it’s Committee of Management for the next 12 months.

It’s a blend of experience and fresh energy to take on the challenges for 2019-20. Scott Landells was again elected President and this time leads a 7 person team that includes:

  • Phil Fraser – Vice President
  • Greg Clydesdale – Secretary
  • Bernie Jovaras – Treasurer
  • Karen Keegan – General Committee
  • Lannelle Bailey – General Committee
  • Peter Watkins – General Committee

This will be Scott’s 6th term as President and his 7th on the CoM. Greg will enter his 5th term as Secretary and 6th on the CoM. Bernie, formerly Vice-President, has stepped into the role of Treasurer after serving the previous 2 terms as Vice-President. Bernie was also a CoM in the “early days” from around 2011-13. Phil enters his second term on the CoM eagerly stepping into the Vice-President’s role on the CoM. Karen Keegan is also entering her second full term on the CoM continuing in a General CoM role. Karen is also Acting Site Co-ordinator at our Yackandandah site. Both Lannelle Bailey and Peter Watkins join the Indigo FM CoM for their first term. Each come well credentialled and have shown an impressive level of enthusiasm over the past year and we’re excited to welcome them on board. Lannelle is also Site Co-ordinator at our Tangambalanga site.

President Scott Landells had this to say about the AGM outcome. “I’m excited and energised by the opportunity to lead Indigo FM again in 2019-20. AGM’s are a truly democratic process and that process has delivered a Committee of Management for Indigo FM that will provide a diverse voice to all communities within Indigo Shire. There’s a healthy blend of experience and freshness with this group and we now take that forward to a very busy 12 months of activity that lies ahead. Some of those activities include our 2019 Radiothon which kicks off in October, getting our Chiltern site on the airwaves permanently, streaming and sharing content across all four of our sites. Also mid-2020 marks our 10 year birthday – for which we are in the process of planning an exciting range of activities through the early part of that year.”

Landells also added “I’d also like to acknowledge the contribution of retiring CoM member Andrea Leonard who is relocating to be closer to her family in the Geelong area. Andrea has been our Treasurer since 2016 and we enter the next 3 years in a healthy financial position. In addition Andrea has provided great stability in the governance of our 100% volunteer run organisation. We look forward to Andrea (and others who may live outside our transmission zone) being able to tune in when we are streaming, which should be by early 2020.”

Get Yr Folky Roots On at Osbornes Flat Hall on Sunday 13 October

As part of our annual Radiothon celebrations – we are excited to announce a fun day of folk and roots vibes at Osbornes Flat Hall on Sunday 13 October featuring This Way North and Tuck Shop Ladies.

It would be fair to say that Tuck Shop Ladies – aka Sam Lohs and Rosie Burgess – and This Way North – Leisha Jungalwalla and Cat Leahy – have gathered a lot of frequent flyer points if such a thing applied to van trips to local festivals in North-East Victoria.

Rosie and Sam are regulars at Eldorado’s Folk Rhythm and Life as well as By The Banks in Albury in their “other band” Rosie Burgess Trio. They have built a fearsome reputation wowing crowds with their infectious acoustic roots vibe and witty stage antics.

Leisha and Cat of dynamic soul roots duo This Way North have been officially “on the road” for over a year now, enjoying the freedom and adventure of a no fixed address lifestyle. They’ve not only been in North East Victoria every few months but have also just returned from a stint in Canada.

Cat is excited about this upcoming show when she recently shared her thoughts with us here at Indigo FM – “We’re just back from 3 months touring in Canada and are so stoked to be heading to the northeast. This area and all the amazing people we’ve met here are so important to us, it’s kinda like coming home… hey, maybe we’ll just move here!”

Rosie offered this insight to their show  “There’s nothing we love more than packing up our van and heading into the North East Victorian landscape. This is a case where it’s the journey AND the destination that are important. We can’t wait to crack open our ukulele cases and have a sing with people in the Osbornes Flat Hall. Knowing we can listen to Indigo FM on the way into town just sweetens the deal.”

Indigo FM will have a presence on the day with a marquee stall where you can chat with local presenters about membership as well as being trained up to do your own show. We will also have some flash new T-shirts for sale in both men’s and women’s styles.

Tickets for this fun afternoon are $20 and can be purchased through Eventbrite
