As part of our annual Radiothon celebrations – we are excited to announce a fun day of folk and roots vibes at Osbornes Flat Hall on Sunday 13 October featuring This Way North and Tuck Shop Ladies.

It would be fair to say that Tuck Shop Ladies – aka Sam Lohs and Rosie Burgess – and This Way North – Leisha Jungalwalla and Cat Leahy – have gathered a lot of frequent flyer points if such a thing applied to van trips to local festivals in North-East Victoria.

Rosie and Sam are regulars at Eldorado’s Folk Rhythm and Life as well as By The Banks in Albury in their “other band” Rosie Burgess Trio. They have built a fearsome reputation wowing crowds with their infectious acoustic roots vibe and witty stage antics.

Leisha and Cat of dynamic soul roots duo This Way North have been officially “on the road” for over a year now, enjoying the freedom and adventure of a no fixed address lifestyle. They’ve not only been in North East Victoria every few months but have also just returned from a stint in Canada.

Cat is excited about this upcoming show when she recently shared her thoughts with us here at Indigo FM – “We’re just back from 3 months touring in Canada and are so stoked to be heading to the northeast. This area and all the amazing people we’ve met here are so important to us, it’s kinda like coming home… hey, maybe we’ll just move here!”

Rosie offered this insight to their show  “There’s nothing we love more than packing up our van and heading into the North East Victorian landscape. This is a case where it’s the journey AND the destination that are important. We can’t wait to crack open our ukulele cases and have a sing with people in the Osbornes Flat Hall. Knowing we can listen to Indigo FM on the way into town just sweetens the deal.”

Indigo FM will have a presence on the day with a marquee stall where you can chat with local presenters about membership as well as being trained up to do your own show. We will also have some flash new T-shirts for sale in both men’s and women’s styles.

Indigo FM Tangambalanga has a new Site Co-ordinator with Lannelle Bailey taking on the role.

“I took a leap and became a presenter earlier this year (2019) not realising the full extent to which I would enjoy being on air. So now I have taken another leap to test my hand as the new site coordinator at the Tangambalanga studio. I am looking forward to seeing our team grow and to building the program to have a minimum of one live show every day of the week.”, Bailey said.

Each Indigo FM site is co-ordinated by a volunteer Site Co-ordinator whose role is to connect and engage the local community and members / presenters as well as provide an important conduit to the Committee of Management and Sub-Committees.

President Scott Landells is excited with Lannelle Bailey’s appointment. “Our Committee of Management are really excited that Lannelle has agreed to take on the role. She has very strong networks at a local community level, as well as being a good communicator. It can be a challenging role at times, however we’re very confident that with the support of our off-air team and local members that Lannelle will continue the steady build of this site”, Landells said.

As well as her new off-air role, Bailey’s popular Friday Morning with Lannelle show – which airs Fridays from 9:30am – 11am continues it’s weekly schedule.

Indigo FM has released its latest playlist (version 14.0) in recent days and it’s yet another playlist that champions diversity and local independent music.

Due to the quantity and quality of music submitted the decision was made to run with a larger playlist of 900 songs, 64% of which are Australian artists. There are over 700 different acts whose music is featured on this playlist which will run throughout the second half of 2019. You can view the new Playlist here

Indigo FM Tech-Programming Sub-Committee member Phil Fraser gave this overview. 

“We have had contributions to the playlist from presenters at Beechworth, Yackandandah and Tangambalanga stations and also contributions from future presenters at the soon to be live station in Chiltern.

Indigo FM has a policy of supporting Australian music, especially Local and Independent musicians who may struggle for airtime on more commercial stations, so as well as hearing well known tracks from the past you will be able to hear some of the great young talent that is emerging in Australia today. We at Indigo FM are proud to be able to support these musicians by providing them airtime.

Though we are big supporters of Australian music we also enjoy listening to a diverse range of music from around the world, as well as an extensive variety of music from America and Britain we have also included music from countries such as France, India, Jamaica, Brazil, Mongolia and Cameroon.

The latest playlist also includes songs from our extensive “Indigo FM Alive” catalogue of local and touring acts who have recorded live in our studios over the years. On this latest Playlist there are around 30 of these songs including young local artists Tayla Grace and Katie Gaston, international acts The Young Folk (Ire), Dayan Kai and Melissa Crabtree (USA), Red Tail Ring (USA), Scott Cook (Can) as well as acclaimed local acts Monique Clare, Tom Richardson, The Royal High Jinx, Claire Anne Taylor, Dean Haitani and Joel Havea. 

The local live Music and Festival scene is well represented with recent performers like Jack The Fox, Emilee South, Rhysics, Dana Sipos, The Maes, Daniel Champagne, Georgia Knight, Tumbleweed, Ben Whiting, Truly Holy, Whiskey Dram, Little Georgia, Pablo Pace, Gabriella Cohen, Swim Team, Adrian Clark, Matt Joe Gow, Amaya Laucirica, Feelds, Lachlan Denton, The Pigs, Alana Wilkinson, Woodland Hunters, Timberwolf, Jade Imagine, Merpire, Tracy McNeil, The Inner Vision and The Northern Folk.

Your chance to play a key role in co-ordinating our 2019 Radiothon in October awaits.

Indigo FM’s Radiothon first commenced in 2014 and is our annual Membership Drive as well as a month long celebration of all things Local Radio. It’s one month where we highlight how we innovate to provide a unique voice for local communties whilst hosting a range of fun events across Indigo Shire. And along the way we encourage new and renewing members alike to take advantage of the opportunity to join up and be in the running for a host of cool prizes.

This activity does require some co-ordination. Preparation begins in early August and runs through September as we arrange Radiothon sponsors, donations, prizes and promotions. Hence we are calling for Expressions of Interest for the role of Radiothon Co-ordinator. Expressions of Interest close Friday 2 August.

The Radiothon Co-ordinator will work with each of our Site Co-ordinators to develop Radiothon related programming and local community engagement activities. The role is overseen by our Marketing Sub-Committee with its Chair providing key support as required.

Your chance to play a key role at our newest radio site at Tangambalanga awaits as we aim to set up this site to become more sustainable and also grow it’s local focus.

Indigo FM is calling for Expressions of Interest for two new  roles at our Tangambalanga site. These roles are for a Site Co-ordinator and a Technical Officer. Expressions of Interest for each role closes Friday 19 July.

The Site Co-ordinator role involves co-ordinating the on-air and off-air activties at this site. Activities include recruitment, training and scheduling of presenters, developing and growing local programming as well as community engagement in general.

The Technical Officer role is primarily responsible for ensuring the smooth technical output at this site. Activities will include maintenance and servicing of equipment including technological (PC, monitors, wi-fi modem etc) as well as appraising the ongoing technical needs. Additionally we offer input more broadly to Indigo FM’s strategic set-up of technical / technological equipment across all sites to enhance audience reach via our Tech-Programming Sub-Committee,

Indigo FM have received a $3,000 cheque as a recipient of AusNet’s ‘Energising Your Community’ Development Program. This grant will enable the local radio station to provide a streaming version of Indigo FM as well as providing links between each site to share content.

President Scott Landells explained that streaming and sharing content are key long-term strategic goals. “We are thrilled with the receipt of this grant, which will enable us to take on board a project that for us is very exciting and quite challenging. We wish to thank AusNet for making the grant available as well as Indigo Shire for partnering with AusNet and encouraging community groups such as ourselves to apply.”

“Our licence category limits the power wattage that we can transmit with and we are very much aware that audiences on the fringe of the towns where we operate – Beechworth, Tangambalanga and Yackandandah (and shortly Chiltern) are currently unable to receive our signal. Being able to stream Indigo FM will enable us to connect with those audiences and help in continuing our quest to be a local voice for communities of Indigo Shire.”

“This grant will also allow us to share content – such as radio shows, specials, interviews, announcements, community, tourism and event promotion between our sites. Whilst some of Indigo FM’s content is site specific, a lot can be shared to our other sites, which we feel will add significantly to the Indigo FM listening experience.”

Indigo FM can be tuned into on 88.0 FM in Beechworth, Tangambalanga and Yackandandah. A Chiltern site is planned to be up and running before mid-year on 87.6 FM.

In 2019 we will be shedding a bit of light on the various volunteers at Indigo FM who contribute so much behind the scenes.  Felicity Rule  – Fizz to her many friends – is one of those volunteers. Some of the tasks Felicity does quietly in her spare time include –

• Taking notes for Beechworth Presenters Meetings and Sub-Committees
  Marketing Sub-Committee (core member along with Doug Wallen, Scott Landells and Phil Fraser)
• Designed event posters and social media images for Radiothon and Music Trivia
• Handles the cash and ticket arrivals at Events like Music Trivia Nights and Concerts
• Designs Gig Guide logos
• Does the Gig Guide as a back-up
• Designed the Indigo FM Presents banner
• Conducted phone interviews and created podcasts in support of:
  A Hitch To The Sticks – interviewed Ella Hooper from Killing Heidi
  Beechworth Celtic Festival – interviewed William Hutton from Claymore
  By The Banks Music Festival – interviewed organiser James Eggleston

Here is Fizz’s story in her own words.

“As a volunteer presenter for over a year now, I’d like to take the time to thank our local radio station Indigo FM, our President, my fellow presenters/volunteers and everyone who is tirelessly and creatively involved with the station on all levels. A massive thank you also to our open-minded listeners, who take a chance listening to our shows, be it live or via podcasts.

We voluntarily give up our time and creative energy for the Indigo Shire community, supporting and mentoring each other as volunteers along the way. Our music features more variety than your daily commercial radio and I am proud of this. It’s what makes us unique. Our Trivia nights and special concert events are so much fun, and we delight in bringing you the weekend Gig Guide each Friday.

We have overcome every hurdle thrown in front of us and also never waver in our focus to provide a voice to our local community.

Music is universal, it’s sure to be about the one thing we all have in common. Music brings people together, even as our music tastes may be different. Which is okay, because not everyone can like the same artists, bands and genres. You can always ‘turn the dial’ so to speak if some music isn’t to your liking.

I made several mistakes when I first started (and sometimes still do) which I admit, own, leave behind me and laugh about later. That is always a possibility when you are presenting a show live. But the show goes on!

I must say I was trained incredibly well and taught not to draw attention to my mistakes, but to push on gracefully. After all, I am an imperfect human being who is bound to make error from time to time (as we all know, no one on this earth is perfect). I am not my mistakes and neither is The Nostalgia Hour.

As someone who was struggling personally in 2017, Indigo FM welcomed me and allowed me to utilise my creativity as an artistic person, which is often stifled by the routine of adult life. I have never been a part of such a mature team of people who work in respectful cohesion with one another.

If not for Indigo FM, I would not have had so many creative opportunities and experiences. I am so proud of the station‘s reputation, which is thanks in part to those out there in our community, who truly know us by our efforts and presence.

I get to do what I’ve always wanted to do: to live my life creatively on a regular basis and I could not be more thankful.

We do all this for you and will continue to do so.

Popular young Beechworth duo The Inner Vision have been confirmed as the support act for Daniel Champagne’s Yackandandah Public Hall Concert on Saturday May 4.

The Inner Vision formed in 2017 and have been enjoying a steady rise in popularity performing at various venues and events within Indigo Shire including Beechworth Music Festival, old Beechworth Gaol, Battle of the Bands, Bridge Road Brewers and the Empire Hotel. They are are a two-piece consisting of Asha (guitar / vocals) and Indigo (piano).

“Playing with Daniel Champagne will be an experience unlike any other we have had before. We are so grateful for this offer and are extremely excited to be a part of it”, said Asha.
